Our Spanish motorcycle tour begins by taking the afternoon ferry from Portsmouth to the port of Santander and our first overnight stay in this lovely city.
We follow the superb roads through Asturias in to Castilla y Leon, Rioja and then the Basque country, all of which offer fabulous scenery and exceptional motorcycling country. We will stay in the wonderful cities of Santander, Leon, Salamanca, Segovia, Logrono and Bilbao using fabulous four- star hotels along the way. There are stunning roads and the beautiful scenery of the landscape as we pass through each different region.
Our Northern and Central Spain tour is one of the very best destinations for motorcycling and Missed Adventures gives you the opportunity to experience it with us.
Our Northern and Central Spain tour begins from Portsmouth and you should make your way there for the late afternoon ferry at 17:15 to Santander. Relaxing on board you can start your holiday and use the ships facilities that include, bars, restaurants and cafes or the seated viewing areas around the ship.
Welcoming you to its unique and diverse landscape, Cantabria has a lot to offer. Our 4* hotel in the beautiful city of Santander has secure garage parking and gives us an ideal location, being very close to the centre, and its many restaurants and bars.
A stunning ride today with mountain roads and breathtaking scenery all the way as we travel away through Cantabria and Asturias with lush green fields and an abundance of dairy cows. The beginning of the journey today is more reminiscent of Switzerland than Spain, with a wonderful backdrop of mountain peaks surrounding us. We cross these peaks and head away from the Picos de Europa eventually dropping down towards the open plains. Our location for tonight is the delightful city of Leon. Here we have secure garage parking at a lovely four-star hotel that is close to the old town with its many bars and restaurants.
This morning we make our way south across the panoramic open plains. We travel at a leisurely pace and allow everyone to see and feel the region, take in the aromatic smells that the landscape has to offer. We experience rural Spain at its best, a land that many tourists do not see when they visit this beautiful country.
Crossing the wide-open and fertile farming valley of the Vega de Toral, this really is big sky country with views that go on forever. We cross the Douro river, which has the Tierra del Pan (land of the bread) at its north and the Tierra del Vino (land of the wine) to its south. We press on south towards the vibrant University City of Salamanca. It is claimed that Spain’s most beautiful Plaza Mayor is in Salamanca and it definitely does not disappoint. You can watch the building facades change colour with the setting of the sun and marvel at the stunning architecture that surrounds you here. We have a beautiful 4 star hotel, set in a wonderful location close to the city and its sights. Secure garage parking is also provided for comfort and peace of mind.
Today we head for Segovia a beautiful and historic city, famous for its magnificent and well-preserved Roman viaduct. On route we will travel via Avila ‘the walled city’ which also boasts a wealth of history down the ages. We avoid motorways and again follow national routes allowing you to experience the journey and take in the stunning countryside. In Segovia we have a well-appointed 4* hotel close to the attractions offering secure motorcycle parking and on site facilities.
From Segovia we have an excellent ride today as we head for Logrono. We travel through Castile y Leon and eventually on in to La Rioja, through the stunning Sierra de Cebollera national park. Rioja is world renowned for the quality of its wine and the rich soil here, along with the climate, help to make this region famous amongst wine connoisseurs. Logrono is a fabulous place to stay with the old world narrow back streets and tapas bars, mixing with the modern façade of the city. Here we have an excellent 4* hotel providing secure garage parking for your motorcycle and set close to the pedestrian only zone
Travelling north from Logrono we head through Rioja and then the Basque country towards its Northern coast. The scenery in both regions is spectacular, with the vivid greenery of the lush fields blending in with panoramic hilltop vistas. Entering the Basque country we continue North towards our destination Bilbao, finally taking the scenic coastal route. We journey through little harbour towns, past coves and beaches before the road turns inland and crosses the Oka River heading towards the city.
Bilbao is a wonderful city with many parks and tree lined walkways, along with the ‘pedestrian only’ Casco Viejo’. Among the streets here stands the impressive 14th century Santiago Cathedral and a feast of gourmet pleasure, from simple to elaborate tapas and rustic wholesome dishes to Michelin star cuisine, it is all here.
Our 4* hotel here is close to the city centre and has a wealth of amenities including secure onsite motorcycle parking.
After breakfast we leave the hotel and make our way towards Bilbao port for the morning ferry to Portsmouth. As we are in Bilbao on our final evening, we can take breakfast before departing in time to catch the 10:30 am sailing. Please note; there is a 1 euro toll on route back to Bilbao port.
The ferry docks in Portsmouth at 09:00 – 09:15 leaving you refreshed for your onward journey home and that chance to look back through the many scenic holiday pictures.
