Today you should make your way to Portsmouth in time to catch the midday ferry to Bilbao. Relaxing on board you can start your holiday and use the ships facilities that include, bars, restaurants, cafes and the cinema, or the seated viewing areas around the ship.
We arrive late afternoon in Santander and journey the short distance in to the centre for our first overnight hotel. The hotel here has been used by Missed Adventures over many years and has a wealth of amenities including secure overnight parking.
Following a relaxed breakfast, we leave Cantabria and make our way via Asturias to the Picos de Europa. We will ride some of the roads in the region on route to our hotel, where we have a two night stay in order to explore the region more.
The next two days are all about more of the Picos, as we travel the fabulous roads in this region. No description or picture can give any justice to the wonderful panoramic views afforded in this mountainous region. The unique quality of the roads and the number of switchbacks and turns make this an absolute must do for any motorcyclist. We make a circular route today through beautiful scenery before returning to our hotel and therefore, any unnecessary luggage can be left behind in your room.
Leaving the hotel today we head southwest through more stunning scenery, before turning north and heading for a wonderful and famous viewpoint of the coast and the mountains. We back-track to the national route and continue on towards our next destination, the Asturian capital of Oviedo. It has a fabulous mix of the old town area and state of the art new builds and this university-city is a great place for an overnight stay. Cider is well renowned here as being the favoured drink during an evening out and it is also used in many recipes from the region. There is also a very unique way of pouring it from the bottle, which has to be seen. Oviedo is a lovely city and it will definitely not disappoint you.
The following morning we make our way west through beautiful scenery as we head in to the autonomous region of Galicia. After Lugo, we make a final run in to the beautiful and historic city of Santiago de Compostela. This city, famous for the ‘Camino’ – ‘ way or path of St James’ and its stunning Cathedral, has a lot to offer any traveller. It is reputed that Saint James, one of Jesus apostles is buried in a vault in the cathedral and many visitors come each year to see this burial site. The city has lovely old-fashioned narrow streets, which are lined with bars and restaurants and it is an excellent place to stay on route to Portugal. Our 4 star hotel offers us superb rooms and secure garage parking and is also close to the centre of the old town.
Today is a free day and for those that wish, we can travel light and leave the luggage behind as we take a ride out to the coast. We visit Fisterra, one of the most western points in Europe and the view from the coast here is wonderful. For those wanting a day off the bike, Santiago has plenty to offer and you can relax in and around its wonderful environment with your hotel and all its amenities on the doorstep.
Our journey today takes us south today, towards the port city of Vigo. After crossing the ‘Rande river bridge’ we are now at the border with Portugal. Using national routes we head towards Braga where we have a lovely 3* hotel set in the heart of this historic city. Braga is sometimes classed as the Rome of Portugal due to the number of churches here and there are many wonderful old stone buildings in and around the network of streets.
A truly stunning ride today will see us head south through the Porto region, before crossing its fabulous mountainous terrain and descending to the river Duoro below. South of Viseu we enter the beautiful Serra de Estrela national park and then climb to its hill top ski station, before dropping in to the valley and our hotel in the foothills of this area of natural beauty. The ride today covers areas with some of northern Portugal’s most beautiful scenery and it will not disappoint you.
Today we head back over the border and in to Spain, using national roads and travelling through some fabulous countryside at the southern most point of our tour. We head across open country and make our way in to the beautiful and wild region of Extremadura. We have a lovely city based hotel here offering us a chance to sample the restaurants and bars located close by.
The famous walled city of Avila is our destination for this evening and we cross some stunning terrain to get there, in-cluding part of the Sierra de Gredos. Avila is a beautiful and historically city and as we approach its boundary limits the fortified walls are clear for all to see. These walls are claimed to date back to the 12th century when the Christians and Moors fought for control of this part of the country.
Today we head east and then north on route to Valladolid. On our way we will travel via Segovia, which boasts probably the best-preserved Roman aqueduct in Europe. This is a stunning site and well worth a visit and it was in daily use until only a few years ago. We cross the open plains on route to Valladolid and it really is wide-open countryside. In Valladolid we have a well-appointed hotel close to the city centre and all its attractions. It has superb on site facilities and offers secure garage motorcycle parking. This city has excellent and lively nightlife, particularly as we are here on a Saturday evening and after sampling delicious tapas in a wonderful atmosphere, we have a favourite restaurant, which serves excellent food.
The city of Burgos and the legend of “El Cid” is what we head for today and we have an excellent hotel here used by Missed Adventures during previous tours. The Castilla Y Leon region is wonderful and we travel over the open plains towards this lovely city. The city gates are a famous sight here and while strolling around you can see many of the statues in honour of Burgos’s famous son – ‘El Cid’.
After breakfast we leave the hotel and take the fantastic N623 a real treat for motorcyclists, as we travel north towards Santander. As we are in the Picos de Europa the evening before, we can have a relaxed morning and take breakfast before heading north for the 15.15 sailing to Portsmouth
The ferry docks in Portsmouth at 14.15 leaving everyone refreshed for their journey home and a chance to look back on the photographs after a truly memorable holiday tour.
